Snake Oil

I begin with an example:
The difference between Metformin and Metformin ER.

I have a prescription for Metformin 500 mg tab, delivered mail order by CVS. I insist on manufactured by Granules

For some reason, Granules stopped production of Metformin, which caused a nationwide shortage of the Granules Metformin.  There were none to be had.

I looked at the Granules Website, and checked the products page .  They have Metformin listed (4th from the end), and they have 2 different kinds of Metformin ER:
1)  Metformin ER Glumetza, and
2)  Metformin ER Glucophage XR.

I don't claim to understand all of this.  What I do understand is that the ER stands for Extended Release.  When my bottle of Metformin ran out, the pharmacy (CVS) said that if I wanted to continue with Metformin ER by Granules, I would need to obtain a new prescription from my doctor.

My conclusion: Metformin and Metformin ER are not the same thing.

The difference is the letters ER, which stand for Extended Release. The words "extended release" don't show up anywhere in the Dailymed for Metformin. As you might expect, the words "extended release" are prominently displayed in the Dailymed for the Metformin ER.
